At first glance, you wouldn’t even notice Jamie Graham at a steppers set. He’ll sit quietly perched atop a chair with a content look on his face as he gazes out into the crowd of steppers. However, this Alabama born promoter has a pen and pad in his head and he is constantly storing information in his mental Rolodex. The information that he is storing has probably contributed to him being one of the most effective promoters in the south thus far. His 2007 All White Affair had over 600 attendees.

Last Saturday, August 9th, I attended After 7 Productions monthly set that was held at the Dorchester. This month, the gentleman were identically dressed in turquoise blue tailor made suits with matching tailor made shoes and only James changed things by wearing a floor length jacket. Well known for their dance routines and always wearing resembling attire, After 7 has been affectionally nicknamed "The Temptations." The magnificent musical host was DJ Lavelle C who has been providing the music for this group for more than 5 years.

ChiStepper caught up with Sunshine Haywood, who recently took an official position with Club D'Elegance. Those who have been around the club for the last year or so, know that Shine Entertainment has basically been the only group keeping the doors open at this joint. A virtual ghost town for the last 2 or so years, Sunshine has big place to restore D'Elegance, or as the faithfuls still refer to it, 3G's back to it's past glory. See how she plans to do it!

Last night's 39 & Under Prelims at Club D'Elegance were awesome. The place was packed to capacity and felt like the old "3G's." A number of great dancers graced the floor, and Pete Frazier cranked up the heat with his MCing skills. DJ Raphael agreed to spin before heading down to his hole-in-the-wall hotspot "Some Place Else" and the crowd was in for an awesome show. DJ Steve Miggedy Maestro was in the building, and steppers L. C. Henderson, Donnie Davis, Darren, Royce, James, were among the many heavy hitters who showed up and got down.

Let's do it again. The same two ladies and a different man; Cheryl, Tracey, and DJ Darren are the members of The Buzz. Cheryl and Tracey are also members of Good Time's Production who gave a nice party last Sunday and they managed to pull it off again this Sunday August 3, at the Lexington House. People were not through with them yet. DJ Darren did a good job of entertaining the massive crowd by also serving as the musical host for the evening. People were also engaged in the sounds of a special guest recording artist Rachel Brown, who is making her way around the music circuit.

I guess it’s to be expected that as steppin’ presents itself in the form of exhibitions, workshops and sets that more and more people will become exposed to the dance and want to learn it. Drew Alexander II has found a place in this year’s Out-of-Towners category in the Worlds Largest Steppers Contest. This past June, The White Party in Detroit enabled Drew to start receiving a lot of attention from many of the old school and new school Chicago steppers who were here. Drew has the of his ability to do all of his combinations with both his right and left hands.

Let the good times roll. The very modest and demure Cheryl has been steam rolling Good Times Production for many years. She has gained a loyal legion of followers through the years and this summer brings about a new location for the group. The 4th Sunday sets are now held at the new Marmon Grand Ballroom in the south loop Chicago area on Michigan Ave.
