“The roach, the roach, the roach is on the wall, we don’t need no water let the motha f----- crawl!” Mykel “Shorty Smooth” Farr
Sunshine, DJ Raphael and Rello gave the party of all parties at Orbies Night Club in Gary, Indiana this past Saturday. Once Markie G played the hot track “Sunshine” … the party became officially HOT!
The numbers are in and 727 people (the club legally holds 350) came to this very dimly lit and cozy club which offered its guests the finest music provided by a gumbo of guest DJs such as DJ Stevo (Backyard Boogie Productions), The Shine Entertainment Dream Team Raphael, DJ Mike Flexx (using 5 turntables at the same time), Freddy Mack, DJ Pierre, DJ Calvin and 92.3 FM DJ Boolumaster. Also hypin’ up the crowd were DJ Emmanuel, Lavelle C, Mykel “Shorty Smooth” (Milwaukee) and Unique Maurice who all gave everyone a sampling of music from classic to new school steppin music and “30 minutes of funk” house music montage of the greatest house music beats to hit the scene. Initially, there was a very irritating feedback in the audio system that was reminiscent of elementary school students scratching their nails on a chalkboard but eventually the problem was resolved.
Notable Chicago natives, Swan, Maurice, Ken Amorio, Dwain, Yvette O'Donnell, Quake, Corleon, Rose Wellington, Linda Frazier, "Magic" Mike, Charnice, Khalid, Shine Entertainment (Cycles 1-6), and Mercedes. The out of towners were definitely representing with Candace and Feo (Flint), Dionne and Vickie (Milwaukee), Ceola Coaston (Phoenix), Kevin (Twin City Steppers), The Gentleman of Ballroom (Cleveland), Dancin Dons and Divas (Cleveland), Joanie and Easy (IN) and Chris (ATL). I even got to touch base with my Chistepper cohorts Babydoll, Brown Eyes and G. Porgie.
During the course of the evening, Sunshine, always the consummate hostess, made sure that everyone she saw, she greeted with a smile, a hug or a two second booty shimmy. She even challenged me to a Supa Bad Slide contest in which she clearly beat me! (wink) The audience ate it up. Why Orbies only provided two bar maids at the bar which clearly exasperated people Rello and Raphael helped out by becoming make shift waiters to wait on people just so their guests could be comfortable.
The Grab Bag Contest brought in a lot of surprises as the Chicago steppers were paired up with out-of-town guests. Ty Skippy and Celeste stopped by the party and the audience was treated with an impromptu performance by the couple. The applause was thunderous as many people tried to figure out how Ty Skippy was able to move his feet so fast. The winning couple was Candace and Eric Gordon with Ty Skippy and Shine Entertainment’s Arianna Mallory coming in as the runner up couple. As an added attraction at the end of the contest, there was a $400 pair of Versace glasses given away just for bringing up a spool of dental floss to the DJ booth.
At the party’s end, no one wanted to leave. It might have been the over abundance of food, the mixture of steppers from different eras, Sunshine’s comedic microphone antics or the infectious grooves coming from the DJ booth but whatever the reason was, if there is another Shine Entertainment affair coming up … the results can only be bigger and better than this one!
