I finally made it out to Gary, Indiana for the 219 Steppers Club's 4th anniversary and Sweetest Day party. Following the Sweetest Day theme, the club members handed out gift bags with boxes of chocolate to the first 100 women that entered the Genesis Convention Center. Three of those bags included a $25 Red Lobster gift certificate, and being a shrimp lover, I wished I was one of the luck recipients.
The group members: Joanie and Bobby "Easy" Allcorn, Chris (Frenchy), Jackie Holmes, Bobby Ballard and Keathia Ezell were introduced individually as they eased on down the Soul Train line. Yes, I said Soul Train Line and they took steppin' to yet another level. Took it way back to the 70's as DJ Lavell C invited the men to form a line on one side of the dance floor and the women on the other.
Lavell's musical mastery kept the floor packed all night, but it was when he put on Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it Up," that made me jump out of my seat and hurry over to the dance floor. Many of us were having a good time with the 20 minutes of this 70's theme and I started reminiscing about when I was a little girl picturing myself dancing down the Soul Train line on TV (the hippest trip in America). Toward the conclusion of the night, the men of the club presented the women of the club with bouquets of flowers, making it a sweet end to an exceptional night. I have to give special thanks to a guy that was being a sweetheart as well. Maurice, thanks for the respect that you continue to show black women and for keeping my thirst quenched.
Taken from Soul Train's famous parting words ... "Wishing all love, peace and ... SOULLLLLL!"
