Ken Bedford’s World’s Largest Steppers Cookout

Ken Bedford hosted another incredible cookout this past Sunday at the Green Lake Forest Preserve in Calumet City.  Ken must have angered mother nature at some point, because with bad weather shutting down Lollapalooza downtown Chicago, it seemed the cookout was doomed, but the luckily weather never made it to the south suburbs.   Thankfully it didn’t because a number of Steppers and non-Steppers alike came out with grills, lawn chairs, and family to have a great time.

I saw a number of performers and personalities on the stage like MC’s Casper and Pete Frazier, artist T. L. Williams, and a great James Brown impersonator.  I saw DJ Cross, DJ Sam Chatman, and DJ Luther Gage on stage spinning records and mingling as well.  In addition to all of the stage talent, Ken had horses and a kids area with go-carts and other fun things to do, not to mention the pool area that was open for children.

I came to the cookout hungry on purpose because I knew there would be a lot of great soul food circulating through the park.  I got my first plate from the legendary Dancette Valerie Love, who blessed with me some BBQ Chicken, Smoked Turkey, Cornbread, and Candy Yams.  Then I ate my cup of delicious banana pudding from Dian Davney.  I was full at this point, but I couldn’t resist a blue cheese & spinach turkey burger prepared by Steppin Herk Williams.  My girlfriend Ryan tasted Herk’s burger and asked me if he was a real chef.  I’ve been hearing about Herk’s cooking for years and I do concur that Herk put together a chef quality burger.  By the time I got around to Patrick and Keisha Borum’s famous Mac n’ Cheese I was sadly too stuffed to indulge.

Following all of that eating, I danced in the 90 degree heat as long as I could to burn some of that food off, and then I took off.  Speaking of taking off, Ken Bedford had a shuttle that picked us up and dropped us off in the mall parking lot, so I didn’t have to make that long walk.  That was really cool.  Ken put an A+ festival together that gets better and better every year.  I truly look forward to the next one.
