Head to Head: California vs. Georgia
Submitted by T. Pratt on Thu, 02/04/2010 - 15:32.
I thought it would be cool to take a quick snapshot of two of Steppin's most popular states, California and Georgia, and see how they stack up with one another. State comparisons are a little tricky as California contains two popular Steppin' cities in L. A. and Oakland, while Georgia's Steppin' population is largely based in Atlanta. While there some similarities, the populations seem to differ quite a bit. Take a look:
Males Steppers
Cali: 19.4%
Georgia: 31.8%
Female Steppers
Cali: 80.6%
Georgia: 68.2%
Education - Bachelor’s Degree of Above
Cali: 61.2%
Georgia: 50%
Average Age
Cali: 45.1
Georgia: 49.1
Years Steppin’ (For the largest percent of dancers)
Cali: 1 to 3 years (57.1%)
Georgia: 4 to 6 years (38.6%)
Learned at a Steppers Class
Cali: 97.1%
Georgia: 72.1%
8 Counters
Cali: 80%
Georgia: 48.8%
Weekly Steppin’ Outings
Cali: 2.21 times per week
Georgia: 1.72 times per week
Chime in and tell us what you think? Is there any truth to these numbers?

How about....?
Terrance,
I respect Georgia and California. I applaud all of their efforts and contributions to steppin. However, if you used Michigan in the equation it probably would have offered a different perspective as to who comes close to US.
Michigan has steppers in Detroit, Lansing, Flint, Kalamazoo, Benton Harbor, Battlecreek and Inkster.
Terrance Pratt and Tracey Bivens, the Chistepper editor and freelance reporter are both from Michigan.
Steppers from Detroit, Michigan have been steppin since 1996.
The White Party plays host to one of the best nationally attended parties every summer-5 years in a row with attendance running into the thousands.
Detroit is the only other city that offers a Saturday 50 Yard Line brunch like Chicago that caters to well over one hundred patrons on a weekly basis thanks to Jeff Clark.
The Steady Steppers has toured all over the nation for well over 7 years and has their own successful DVD steppin instructional series and apparel line.
Michigan has Drew Alexander, Sherry Gordon, Feo, Candace, Keesha Anderson, Mistalocks, James Pacley, Tracey Bivens, Kammal Smith, KP, etc. All of whom received little or no instruction from classes in Chicago but have competed in WLSC or conducted national workshops.
There are currently 20 steppers classes operating around Michigan.
Mistalocks owns and runs the largest steppers dance studio in Michigan.
Our steppers range in age from 19-80 both female and male.
So again, I was just wondering why Michigan wasn't thrown into the comparison block? Surveys versus Reality.
Answer
I haven't gotten to Michigan yet. Be patient Grasshopper!
Cali vs. GA
You Funny Terrance!
BOGUS!!!!!
Hey T,
I agree! I am very disappointed you didn't use MI's stats, but hey compare MI to the CHI and see what stats you come up with! LOL
Maannn...y'all trippin!
Inherent to title for this article "HEAD to HEAD: Ca to Ga" is the number of appropriate comparisons -dah! I thought it was a cute idea and looking forward to the next HEAD to HEAD comparison. Guess it should be MI vs IL huh?? Or, you could make it a three-way thing titled: "TRIO -Who Takes The Lead?" LoL!!!!!
How About this...
Thanks Imasteppa,
Don't worry, I got 'Detroit'. That is the exact concept of "The Journey". Most of the people and events that you mentioned in your article, will be awarded / recognized in one of over seven (7) categories on Saturday March 13, 2010. Detroit / Flint has some of the finest Steppers in the U.S. and Lyfstylz Entertainment is about to highlight them all. Please log on to: www.keepstepn.com/the-journey.html
Thanks Terrance!
I appreciate this article giving stats on California vs. Georgia. The distance to Chicago and recognition in steppin is almost very similiar (Georgia get a little more attention in my opinion compared to California). If it's not Chicago on here then it's Detroit (Halloween Party, Going Away Set, this promoter, that DJ, and that stepper from Detroit) on here. Being from Cali, I love Detroit and appreciate what they have to offer, I've been there every year since I've been steppin' and never even been to the Mecca of steppin, Chicago. Again, thanks for even mentioning California even if its just giving stats on the steppers here vs. the ones in Georgia.
